Machiavelli for Women Part Two

This weekend we welcome Stacey Vanek Smith, NPR host of The Indicator and correspondent for Planet Money, who joined us to discuss her recently released book, Machiavelli for Women: Defend Your Worth, Grow Your Ambition, and Win the Workplace.

Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance.

But despite all of this, the payoff is, quite literally. not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

So why, in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, is the glass ceiling still holding strong? And how can we shatter it for once and for all? Stacy Vanek Smith’s advice: ask Machiavelli “with this delicious look at what we have to gain by examining our relationship to power.”

Thrift Savings Plan For All Part Two

This weekend on the show we're joined by labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci and her new co-author, Kevin Hassett (former Trump administration CEA Chair) to discuss their recently released white paper outlining a plan to help millions of Americans build retirement wealth.

The duo attempt to generate a practical solution to the savings crisis, with their proposal showing the impact of expanding access to a savings and investment program for lower-income Americans modeled after the highly successful federal Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).

Remembering 9/11 Part Two

Twenty years after Sept. 11, we're giving you a break from the money talk, and instead re-airing an interview we did back in 2017 with retired Admiral William “Bill” McRaven.

If Bill’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he presided over the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that resulted in the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Bill was the man who identified the body when it was flown back to Afghanistan and told President Obama that the U.S. finally had their guy.

A few years later in 2014, the four-star admiral and 37-year Navy SEAL veteran delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em Horns!). Little did McRaven know that his address, which spoke to how students could overcome challenges and change themselves, would become a viral hit with more than 10 million views online.

In January, 2015 Bill became the Chancellor of the entire University of Texas system (retired 2018) and was encouraged to expand his commencement speech into a book, Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World.
